ebersb9 is pleased to announce its next solo exhibition The girl who stopped being human! by Krista Hoefle
Krista Hoefle's installation projects explore the digital and analog devices scientists use to construct visual representations of biological information. She uses technology in combination with other studio practices--namely sculpture, printmaking, photography, video and design--to create imagined, biological visualizations of a character. Scans, x-rays, sonograms, models, and prostheses are distributed throughout a space and allude to a (monstrous) body possessed by this fictional character. Always female, she fulfills archetypal roles found within the genres of sci-fi, cyberpunk, and horror (the monstrous feminine, the final girl, the cyborg, for example). Whether her qualities are inherent (born with telekinesis), or byproducts of her environment (exposure to radiation), she is positioned on the fringe of mainstream society. Typically a 'freak of nature,' she occupies Hoefle's installation spaces in order to complicate, subvert, and reposition the social critique often found in speculative fiction. The girl who stopped being human! is a current installation project that explores the idea of gynotopias in conjunction with scientific visualization, drawing inspiration from 1950's B-movies of love-starved amazons from outer space.
Hoefle has exhibited widely including Chicago, New York, California, and Hungary. She is currently an Associate Professor and Gallery Director in the Department of Art at Saint Mary's College.
